Abstract
1) This is to report on initial experiences of portal systemic shunt in Capital Army Hospital during the year 1962.
Six cases included is this report were exclusively young ROKA soldiers who had cirrhosis of liver with portal hypes tension. Splenorenal shunt was performed on three cases, portacaval shunt on two and splenectomy only on one case.
2) Average value of preoperative portal pressure, measured at the operating table was 396 mm. saline, and average pressure fall after formation of shunt was 127. 5 mm. saline in portacaval shunt group.
3) Postoperative liver function tests showed more derangement in portacaval shun group than in splenorenal shunt group. The splenorenal shunt was more effective in the correction of peripheral blood pictures.
4) Ascites persisted up to two months after operation in our cases of end-to-side portacaval shunt. However, the response to medical therapy was fairly good.
5) All case except one had no episode of major varies bleeding, thus the surgery ¢¥¢¥,was more of Prophylactic shunt. There has been no operative mortality. One of pulmonary atelectasis and one of temporary hepatic failure were recorded as morbidity.
